Reflecting on the Blessings of God

Deuteronomy 28:1,2 “And it shall come to pass, if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe [and] to do all his commandments which I command thee this day, that the LORD thy God will set thee on high above all nations of the earth: And all these blessings shall come on thee, and overtake thee, if thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God.”

It is good to be blessed. It is also good to know what the Lord considers a blessing and what He considers a curse. For the purposes of this blog and keeping it short, please have your Bible handy, as I will not be reposting every single verse.

The first things God mentions after verse 2 are two places where we shall be blessed. He says, in the city, and in the field. I think one way to understand that is to consider that we will be blessed among the people (in the city) and among nature (in the field). I think it is also important to note that business of a mercantile sort is done in the city (or any leadership government etc.) and business of an agricultural sort is done in the field. That we will be blessed in both of these places speaks of the abundance of God’s grace unto us.

He goes on to say that the “fruit of thy body” and of the fruit of our fields and our livestock. All of these things have to do with the production of offspring, whether it is our children, or our plants or our animals. I would especially like to point out that children are a blessing. To have children is a blessing that God can withhold at anytime for any reason, but especially for disobedience. For if He is to bless our obedience with fruitful bodies, then we can be assured that the counter curse is to be broken in reproduction and to not produce children. If we look ahead in the scripture we can see that this is indeed the case Deuteronomy 28:18

.

Now He tells us that our baskets and our stores will be blessed. I think that this means what we save (store) will be blessed.

We will be blessed when we come in and when we go out.

He will cause our enemies to be cast down before our faces. He will cause them to scatter before us. Those who come against us shall be thwarted. I don’t know about you but I think that is a great blessing! I feel the protecting arms of God when I read that verse.

He goes on to bless our storehouse, the place where we have saved carefully. And to bless everything that our hands are set to. This is one of my favorite blessings to pray over my husband. That he would have the blessing of God on his hands and that everything he set his hands to would be blessed. When he is at work (in the city) that he would be blessed in his work, and that it would be profitable for the company and for him. That he would also BE a blessing to those he touches and meets throughout the day. Also we are blessed in the land that the Lord has given us. This was literally for the Jews and they are blessed in Israel, but the Lord has given us land too, and I believe that when we follow his commands and His Son, He blesses us in our land too.

Deuteronomy 28:9,10 “The LORD shall establish thee an holy people unto himself, as he hath sworn unto thee, if thou shalt keep the commandments of the LORD thy God, and walk in his ways. And all people of the earth shall see that thou art called by the name of the LORD; and they shall be afraid of thee.” I think this one is worth so much more! He has sworn to make me holy, and set apart for Him if I will follow his ways. Praise the Lord His Son makes it possible for me to do this!

In verse 11 He says we will be plentiful in goods, I know the Lord has blessed me with goods, I have no lack of anything. I have such an abundance I must constantly give things away or my house overflows. He will make us plentiful in the bearing of children. Boy I am feeling that blessing right now! I will say that I struggled during the last eight weeks to consider this a blessing, not just THIS one, but the idea of being plentiful in the bearing of children, it was considerably difficult to be aware that being sick for eight weeks straight, AGAIN, will be a blessing! It was hard doing it this time around and I don’t think it will be easier next time. But the work and responsibility that comes with the blessing does not negate the Word of God. He says that an abundance in children is a blessing and I agree.

He also mentions the blessing of abundance in the fruit of cattle and of the land. Sometimes I wonder about this one, because it has been my experience that the fruit from my land, my garden, isn’t very plentiful, and often perishes. But nevertheless, He has said I will be fruitful there, and I believe it is possible and look forward to the day.

God will even open up his great treasure and the heavens will send forth the rain in due season! He promises that this rain is part of the blessing of our hands. He says we will lend and not be borrowers. I think this is another important one to pause on. It is a curse to be in debt and to be a borrower, so why do we so often apply for credit and seek to bond ourselves in that way? If He says He can make me a lender and not a borrower, then I believe Him. He is able to provide and to do so abundantly, and to make a way without debt. My husband and I are nearly debt free, we do have a mortgage. I look forward to the day when we live completely free. But that will only happen as we apply the Word of God to our lives and follow Him, in our finances. (Hey maybe I need to figure out what the Word says about gardening!)

Lastly the Lord will make us the head and not the tail, He will set us above and not beneath. It sounds pretty broad, I bet it means in all things. I look forward to heaven when the last shall be made first.

Today I am grateful for the blessings the Lord has placed in my life. My two wonderful children, and the fruit of my womb which is growing quickly. I am grateful that the Lord has blessed my hands and the hands of my husband and everything he lays his hands to do. That he is blessed in the city and that he is blessed in the field and that he is blessed when he comes in and goes out. I married a man who loves the Lord and God has blessed not only my husband but myself through him.

May the Lord bless you and keep you. May He make His face to shine upon you, and give you peace.

A very nice post indeed. Our loving Lord tells us that we are to be thankful, and it’s clear that you are. I am so happy that your illness is subsiding.

I’m so glad you went to such lengths with this passage. I’ve always loved it myself, but hadn’t thought of the storehouse the same way, or in how bountiful it is to have to constantly give things away to keep up with all the accumulation. Great way to see it, and to open other’s eyes!

I often think how different our perspective on wealth here in America would be if we had to live in a third-world country for any amount of time. It’s amazing we complain at all. I love talking about it with my kids, and hopefully it fosters an appreciation for all they have, as well as a heart of mercy towards those less fortunate.

I’m glad you are feeling better…that first trimester is challenging! I only had to deal with a little bit of nausea though, mostly exhaustion!

I say this often because I feel it’s never said enough. The blessings God has power to bestow on His beloved are far greater than material wealth can ever boast. This is not by any means meant to ‘knock’ material blessings, but a teaspoon of humility is worth a gallon of success.

Speaking as someone God has raised from the ashes, I can say that the financial blessings He has given me are great and well appreciated, but it is the ability to stand on my own two feet that I’m most thankful for. Yes, I praise God for my position of authority, but far sweeter is the opportunity to minister to my staff and be an encouragement to them always doing the will of Him who sent me.

I say to anyone who is reading this, I’m thankful for every dollar the Lord has helped me to earn, but I’m more thankful that He has cleared out my heart of old darkness so deeply rooted. I could have gotten a job on my own stength and bought a car, but I never could have cleansed my heart of the hateful, spiteful, depraved, anguished and selfish thing it had become through a lifetime of living for myself.

Funny thing about looking out for oneself, it’s always self-destructive. But by making Jesus the focus of one’s life, and depriving oneself of one’s own desires, one gains true life, the inheritance promised in the Bible to all who would believe in the Blood of the Lamb.

    Love,
    Arthur

    Arthur,

That is so true, and I find myself so often expressing the same things.
